Day 58 122813

Getting in another walk to take advantage of the weather before winter turns harsh again tomorrow. It was also the first consecutive days and first multi-mile walk since I rebooted to this. I wanted to get the walk in before lunch and enjoyed the warmth of the sun. I was mindful to pace myself to start out since I was doubling what I had been doing. Plus the second half of the route adds a third hill. One nice surprise was on the additional route they replaced the sidewalk on three stretches with new concrete so that made for slightly improved terrain. I was surprised how much I picked up the pace on the return because I did the first mile in 30 minutes and the second in 24 minutes. It was a good way to end this year and get a jump on the next. A positive experience to build on.

Day 56 121713

Today was the first post Thanksgiving walk and my first since I turned 47. There is a little warm front before winter returns full force at the end of the week. It was 41 when I started for home but the temp had fallen to 37 by the time I started walking. It had been more than a week since the last snow but I still had to navigate a couple poorly shoveled walks. Dealing with the terrain did slow me down a bit. Or maybe it was the extra weight from Thanksgiving and my birthday cup cakes.

Day 55 112713

I had to get one more walk in before Thanksgiving. The scale revealed that I had lost ground and the holiday possibly could lead to a further set back. I donned my ball cap while wearing gloves, two t-shirts, a sweatshirt and a hoodie before heading out. My progress was less than 100 feet before the winds quickly slapped the grand delusion that I was going to do two miles out of my head. The wind out of the west was biting and whisked away the illusion that the sun offered a blanket of warmth from its radiant sunshine.

The goal was reset to one mile and I trudged on as the wind curled around to come out of the south right in to my face. You might think a southern wind would offer warmth but not at these temperatures. What it did was lower the windchill to 20 degrees. I gladly made the turn at the half way mark to put the winds at my back. With about a tenth to go I started to feel the heat I was generating and had the momentary thought that two miles might have been possible. Then the winds mockingly nudged from behind and started drape a perceivable crispness over my shoulders and back. One mile was good for me especially on a day like this.

Day 50 101313

While not exactly rising from the dead it may seem like that. I was initially sidelined with an ankle injury last December. Then I had some health issues and had a cyst the size of a tennis ball removed from my chest in February. It took until a few weeks ago before I could walk without feeling my newest scar tug at my chest with each step.

I'm almost back to scratch since my weight is back to where it was when I first started last year: 226 pounds. Of course I have the knowledge of what to expect from last year. Plus I'm starting out with a much better pair of shoes.

As I make my way back I'm changing a few things from last year. First I initially only plan to walk two to three days a week. Second I'll only be including the days I actually walk in my tally. Third I'll not be including my diet in my initial posts. I plan to add that back in at some point in the future. For now this will just be a walking journal as I get back into it. I'll just be tracking the distance, time and weather for now.

I'm starting on the same path again with the hope it is a better journey.

Over the next few weeks this will reflect how my entries will be:
